Ellen DeGeneres Gets It

I’m a conservative Republican. My political views are about as far away from those of Ellen as they can be. So, I’ve surprised myself to be writing about her. Even more, I’ve surprised myself to be agreeing with her 100%.

On Sunday, Ellen was seated next to President George W. Bush and Laura Bush at the Dallas Cowboys football game. And, shock of shocks, she was pictured laughing with him. Predictably, she’s taken a boatload of hate and grief on social media for having done so.

“In fact, I’m friends with a lot of people who don’t share the same beliefs that I have. We’re all different, and I think we’ve forgotten that that’s OK that we’re all different,” she responded to the critics. Read the full story.

Amen.

For years, in response to constituent comments that start with “You know, I agree with almost everything you say, but…”, I say “Thank goodness for the ‘but’!” What a boring life it would be if we all agreed on everything.

And, liberals? I have very close friends and beloved family members who are liberal. I love them and they love me. We’re humans, not programmed robots. Whether our differences are narrowly focused or wide chasms, we don’t hate because of our differences. While not changing our core values, we celebrate our common ground, enjoy each other, and love because of the beauty in each of us.

Biden ADMITS Quid Pro Quo

Democrat candidate Joe Biden admits, in this April 3, 2019 report about a January 2018 interview, that he strong armed the government of the Ukraine to fire a prosecutor who was investigating a company tied to his son, Hunter Biden. He actually bragged about this abuse of power.

Democrats are terrified that President Trump is willing to investigate their misdeeds. Their very moves to impeach the President are, in and of themselves, an abuse of power.

We are not fooled by their protestations.

Remembering…

Morris County NJ 911 Memorial
Morris County NJ 9-11 Memorial

On 9-11-2001, I lived in Denville NJ. I had left office as Denville’s mayor just 20 months earlier. Our county lost 64 residents that day and we could see the smoke burning for weeks and weeks from the hill behind Birch Run. We could also see it from “The Hill”, a cluster of County buildings and the location, today, of the Morris County NJ 9-11 memorial.

I sent a Letter to the Editor ten days later. In memory of those who perished, toward understanding of where we are today, I share it below. We will never forget.

We don’t want a CAVE. We want a WALL.

This morning, I wrote my congressman and the White House.  You should too.  Here are the web addresses and what I wrote:

The White House
Congressman Michael Cloud (CD-27)
Congressman Michael McCaul (CD-10)

To Congressman Michael Cloud:
Trump can’t cave on this. YOU can’t cave on this. DO NOT vote for a CR that doesn’t include at least 1/2 of what Trump needs for the “wall”. Any rational person knows the “wall” includes technological efforts as well as a physical wall where possible. Any rational person knows Mexico was never going to outright pay for the wall, but the reduction in immigration costs for those coming in through that country would pay for it, an improvement in balance of trade would pay for it…. Republican messaging is horrible and never says that. But, we NEED the wall. TRUMP needs the wall or he’ll lose his base. He’ll be likened to GWB about whom many only remember “Read my lips…” and then HE caved. We voted for Trump to clean that swamp, to do what he says he’ll do, and for you to back him up. I’ll support him, and you, as vociferously as possible if he does what he said he would do. Those of us with children know the most important thing we can do is to MEAN WHAT WE SAY, to DO what we said we would do. TRUST falls if that doesn’t happen. Pelosi and Schumer will run the show from now to 2020 if Trump and the House cave on this. Thank you, and Merry Christmas to all of you.

To President Trump via The White House:
We DO NOT WANT A CAVE. We WANT A WALL. Messaging is critical. Of course a wall isn’t always a physical wall but also a technological wall. Of course Mexico isn’t going to pay outright dollars but through lower costs of illegals entering the US and in balance of trade. Republican messaging stinks, but the FACT is that we need the wall. We need you to STAND STRONG. We voted for you to get something different, your business acumen. Please don’t be GWB who is remembered for “Read my lips…” and then caving. Please!!!

Texas is in Trouble

While the congratulations posts and emails roll in, Tuesday’s election results should be very troubling for Republicans.

James Dickey, Texas GOP Chair, wrote “Last night we saw the culmination of several years of concentrated effort by the left – and the impact of over $100 million spent – in their dream to turn Texas blue again.  Thankfully they failed to win a single statewide elected office.”

One blogger wrote “For the unprecedented millions of out-of-state dollars spent on O’Rourke’s senate race, it was a bad investment for Democrats. […] So for the gazillions of dollars spent, it achieved four positions on a mid-level appellate court (on our ballot anyway).  Not exactly what they were intending for the investment, but there you have it.”

BRCEC FB Comment about 2018 Election

And, locally, the Bastrop County Republican Party had only this comment, posted on Facebook.

In Bastrop County, only one race on the ballot was contested. One.  And, that was JP Precinct 1, not even a county wide race.

While I’m pleased a Republican won that seat, that’s hardly a result worth cheering.  A broader view finds troubling election results.

The Courts

Republicans lost every single race for a seat on every Court of Appeals, with the exception of the Second Court of Appeals, Place 2.  That is 32 judicial seats (13 were unopposed) that were in Republican hands that are now filled with Democrats.  While each is not a “statewide elected office”, the impact of so many seats being lost across TX is not much different than losing one or more statewide seats.

Many of these courts have now gone from being Republican majorities to Republican minorities.  And, we all know that the Courts are viewed by the Democrats as the final arbitor when they don’t get what they want through the legislative process.

The critical court is the Third Court of Appeals because they hear all governmental appeals.  My county is part of the geography covered by that court. It comes as no surprise that not one voter I spoke with between 9am and 7pm on election day at my precinct had any idea what the Third Court does.  And, I submit that is the case for those voters I did not have the opportunity to ask.  Yet, thousands and thousands voters cast votes for these positions.

Ballot BoxRepublicans need to step up.  This type of sweep of our judicial system does not bode well for Texas. I submit this type of uneducated voting is as much a danger to the future of our Republic as voter fraud.

Leave ALL signs alone. Don’t trespass. Don’t steal.

A few days ago, some Democrat signs in Tahitian Village were apparently destroyed by someone driving through the neighborhood. This prompted a post on the Republican Party’s Facebook page condemning the action and forcefully stating that when the perpetrators are found, they’ll be turned over to the authorities. Because the signs were on Democrat properties, the Bastrop County Young Republicans went so far as to blame the Alt-Right for this wrong-doing.

It’s interesting to me that these two Republican organizations have been silent in the face of trespass and sign theft of Republican signs. Not a peep out of either organization as Cruz signs have been stolen from private property in more than a few cases. Perhaps they didn’t know, you say. Well, maybe, but that’s really hard to believe in the face of property owner reactions, some like the one at left.

It is inappropriate to point fingers at anyone, call out any group without proof, laser focus on only one instance of this type of behavior when it’s happening across the county to all sides.

No one should trespass on private property to remove or destroy anything, including political signs.  It doesn’t matter what candidate from what party a person is supporting, they have a right to display signs supporting that individual or party.  TXDOT regulations require signs to be on private property so anyone taking or damaging a sign is violating trespass and destruction of personal property laws.
